چکیده

Abstract There is a need to understand the feeding behavior ontogeny of newly received high-risk steers. Understanding how calves learn eat out bunk will facilitate implementation management practices that expedite this process and allow animal managers exploit information monitor individual health. To address knowledge gap, steers were for backgrounding was quantified characterized using electronic feedbunks in context. create paradigm, crossbred (n = 20) purchased two groups (Group: n 64 steers; Group 2: 56 steers) from local auction market, transported 800 km Prairie Research Unit Prairie, MS, immediately weighed (shrunk body weight, BW). Steers according research unit space availability. Therefore, purchases occurred 133 days apart. Incidence, prevalence, severity, and risk factors for ruminal acidosis in feedlot steers during backgrounding, diet transition, and finishing.

The objective of this study was to determine the incidence, prevalence, severity, and risk factors for ruminal acidosis in feedlot steers during backgrounding, diet transition, and finishing. Steers were purchased from a local auction market (n = 250; mean ± SD; 330 ± 20.0 kg initial BW) and were grouped together with 28 steers fitted with a ruminal cannula (248 ± 25.5 kg initial BW). Steers we...

Knowledge and high risk behaviors of newly entered students to Tehran University toward HIV/AIDS

Introduction: Statistics indicate increase of HIV/AIDS incidence in Iranian youth. Knowledge and high risk behavior assessment in youth is important in preventive planning of HIV/AIDS. Objective: Present study aimed to determine knowledge and frequency of high risk behaviors about HIV/AIDS among newly accepted students at Tehran University in 2009 in order to use study findings in designing pre...

Backgrounding and finishing diets are associated with inflammatory responses in feedlot steers.

The objective of this investigation was to study the effects of feeding backgrounding and finishing diets on selected acute phase proteins in the plasma of feedlot steers. Two groups of 12 steers each, at the backgrounding and finishing stages, were offered either a backgrounding (45% barley grain-based concentrate and 55% barley silage on a DM basis) or a finishing (91% barley grain-based conc...

Effect of growth implant regimen on health, performance, and immunity of high-risk, newly received stocker cattle.

Growth implant efficacy may be affected when administered to nutritionally stressed calves, whereas the procedure may alter health or the humoral immune response to respiratory vaccination. The study objective was to determine the effect of different administration times (d 0, 14, or 28) of a growth implant containing 200 mg progesterone and 20 mg estradiol benzoate on health, performance, and ...

Relationship between feeding behavior and performance of feedlot steers fed barley-based diets.

The relationship between feeding behavior and performance of 274 feedlot cattle was evaluated using Charolais cross steers from 2 consecutive years averaging 293 ± 41 kg for yr 1 (n = 115) and 349 ± 41 for yr 2 (n = 159). Steers were blocked by BW and assigned to 3 (yr 1) or 4 (yr 2) feedlot pens equipped with a radio frequency identification system (GrowSafe Systems). Each pen contained 5 feed...
